Millions Marked Ashura in Karbala

Millions of Muslims have gathered in Iraq’s holy city of Karbala to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussain, known as Ashura. Ashura rituals involve self flagellation to express deep sorrow over the martyrdom of Hussain, who martyred in Karbala in 680 AD.
Karbala is home to the holy shrines of Imam Hussain, the 3rd Shia Imam and his brother Abol Fazl al-Abbas.
